Biography
"Carl Thorwald Laugesen was born in Marton in 1900. After a somewhat fragmentary primary education at numerous schools, he left when 13 years of age following the breakup of his parents' marriage.

For several years he was engaged in sundry occupations including farm work, bush felling and sheep shearing in both Australia and New Zealand.

By the time he was in his twenties he was able to afford to attend art classes at Canterbury School of Art. This eventually led to employment in poster design and commercial art in Wellington.

He married in 1932 and later served three years in the New Zealand Army for Home Service.

After the war he became attached to the Wellington Technical School of Art where he taught for eight years. During this time he turned professional, specializing in landscapes and portraiture.

He served for 18 years on the Council of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and is currently a life member. His works have been exhibited throughout the country and overseas.

After Mrs Laugesen's death in 1975 he sold the family home in Karori and the holiday house in Taupo and settled in Greytown, where he now resides."

Part of a group of early Impressionist painters, 'Bohemians of the Brush'. Pumpkin Cottage was a gathering place for this group of artists.
