From humble beginnings, the Hannahs story began when a young Irish cobbler, Robert Hannah, opened the first Hannahs footwear shop on January 29, 1868 in the gold mining town of Charleston on New Zealand's West Coast.

Following the gold rush, Hannah moved his business to Wellington, and opened a number of factories in the area to keep up with growing demand. His reputation for providing quality footwear at affordable prices was well recognised and is a promise upheld to this day.

The original Hannahs factories have since been turned into residential apartments while the Hannahs business, boasting 50 stores across the country, is still based in the Wellington region with its head office in Porirua.
