William and Frederick Nelson, of Nelson Brothers' Ltd Taruheru Freezing works, opened in 1889. It was built on the Taruheru River's northern bank, beside Hapara Creek.
Prior to that they had built a freezing works at Tomoana, Hawke's Bay in 1884.
