Biography
David John Barry (1861-1945) began his brewing career driving carts for W F Crawford's brewery on Aberdeen Road in the 1870s. In the 1890s he started his own cordial company and in 1897 took over the lease of the Gisborne Brewing and Malting Company and became its managing director. In 1912 he started his own company, D J Barry & Co., and bought the brewery outright. In 1923 the brewery was taken over by NZ Breweries and merged with Leopard Breweries of Hastings, and operated on the Aberdeen Road site until 1966. D J Barry also owned multiple hotels and a soft drink factory, as well as subsidiary company D J Barry Wines and Spirits Ltd.
