Gourd used for preserving birds or rats. Has a flax basket surround which has plaited muka carrying handles and is decorated with string and blue wool pom-poms with white wool surround. Probably from the mid 19th Century. The basket has a poutama pattern and is coloured in natural and what would have originally been black. Marked 1954.
