Pare
Description
Pare (lintel), possibly from Te Mana o Turanga at Whakato. Red brown colouration. The central figure is a realistic representation of a woman. She has a moko on her chin. She has both hands raised up and to about the level of her shoulders. There are takarangi spirals at either end with five bands of horizontal patterning between them. There is a wide rectangular band of patterning at the base which has damage at both ends, the left hand side end in particular.

This pare may be from the 'Mahia Carved house' described by W. J Phillipps in Records of the Dominion Museum Volume I, No 2. 'Carved houses of the eastern districts of New Zealand.' pp. 80 - 81. There is also a photo of it on its original house somewhere in the photographic collections. At one stage the wharenui stood at Waiwhara. The carvers that worked on this house also worked on Whakato, being amongst those from Ngati Rakaipaaka and alongside Te Aitanga a Hauiti assisted to complete it.
