Pipe

Description
Small clay pipe with natural colour striations. Discovered on Waekanae beach close to the river mouth at the high tide mark, after one of the big rains of early 2023. This pipe would have had a raised bite (mouthpiece) at the end of the stem or a glazed mouthpiece, with the glaze stopping the smoker's lips from sticking to the porous unglazed clay. The spur sticking out from under the bowl is to help the smoker rest the pipe on their fingers without burning them on the base of the bowl.

This is a relatively typical pipe from the second half of the nineteenth century, well-used, judging from the residue in the bowl.
