John's letters

Description
These are the letters home to Gisborne from the time John left Wellington on the Aquitania in September 1941 until just before the start of the Battle of Alamein in October 1942 where he was seriously wounded and eventually sent home by hospital ship. As the letters arrived, they were carefully dated and kept until John was safely home. His eldest sister, Jess Wallace, then typed them and had them bound as a Christmas present from her and her husband Robbie Wallace, for their parents, Tom and Ada Houghton. After Ada died in late 1956 the letters were given back to John.
