New Homestead at Wairakaia
Description
Note from Rodney Faulkner: The new Homestead at Wairakaia. 1905. The original homestead built by Woodbine Johnson had been down on the flats and nearer the road but had burned down in December 1904. A.J.Faulkner had signed the agreement to purchase the property some time before the fire so received the insurance for the loss;£550. He took over the property in March 1905 and immediately arranged for the building of his new homestead. He chose for the site, an exposed ridge with views in every direction but very windy until shelter trees could be established. A team of builders from Te Aute Station in Hawke’s Bay, his fiancée's home, were dispatched to the site and the house was completed by the time they were married in December 1905. The house was typical of the time, small dark internal rooms with a wide verandah around the front. Kitchen and maid’s quarters at the rear.
