Tile draining at Wairakaia
Description
Note from Rodney Faulkner: Tile draining at Wairakaia 1907. Some 10,000 clay tiles were laid at Wairakaia in the summer of 1907-08. Many more were laid over the next few years. The drains were dug by hand, the tiles carefully laid using specialised draining tools and manuka brush laid on top before the lines were filled with soil. 110 years later, these tiles are still giving good service in keeping the valuable flat land drained during wet winters. One of the original drain diggers at Wairakaia was Mr Dunlop who had emigrated from Scotland some years earlier; his son Bob Dunlop spent most of his working life at Wairakaia and retired to a little cottage on the property.
